Yeovilton Air Day 2012 a huge success
Thousands turned out at the weekend for one of the best days out in the South West as Yeovilton Air Day commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Falklands conflict.
Alongside an impressive flying display programme was a host of other attractions and ground displays. It is easy to see why last years Yeovilton Air Day was awarded Silver at the South West Tourism Excellence Awards in the ‘Event of the Year’ category.
Yeovilton based Commando Sea King and Lynx helicopters and other Maritime Squadrons demonstrated their capabilities in the infamous Commando Assault Demonstration with plenty of pyrotechnics! Further UK and foreign military participants also provided fast jet displays, static aircraft, aerobatic display teams and joint flypasts.
The Red Arrows are always a star attraction and they put on an impressive display this year to wow the crowds. Spectators had a rare opportunity to see them land and meet the display team.
Another highlight of the flying display programme was the impressive Russian Antonov An-124 which made a rare appearance and moved gracefully above the watching crowds. This gravity defying aircraft is one of the larges cargo planes ever manufactured and dwarfed the other aircraft.
The day drew to a close with an incredible finale depicting a commando assault which showcased the incredible skills of our armed forces. We think that for a day out where the whole family will be entertained , Air Day is hard to beat.
